INTERVIEW: I AM SLEEPWALKER

image
I AM SLEEPWALKER are a metalcore band from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The band, who recently celebrated the release of their debut EP, are steadily making a name for themselves in their local scene and across Ontario, and I was lucky to chat with them about everything from their music to where they see the themselves in five years.

Describe I AM SLEEPWALKER in twenty words or less.
Melodic powerhouse with heavy hitting lyrics and goofy riffs.

What is Windsor’s local scene like? Do you find there’s a lot of support for local bands?
Honestly, Windsor’s scene can be hit and miss sometimes. A lot of the old faces you’d normally see there have moved away, so the ones who are still around don’t really go out as often as they used to. It might be because we don’t have the same kind of venues we used to have back in the day either. There are really only three places where you’ll ever see a metal show and they aren’t particularly big.

INTERVIEW: Jep Roadie

image
Jep Roadie is a musician from the New England area. Dedicated to creating music with meaning and depth, he’s accomplished a lot in his short time on the scene, with the release multiple tracks; features with music publications; and the upcoming release of his new mixtape, Regal. He’s a pretty busy guy and I was lucky enough to get a chance to discuss it all with him.

How would you describe your music to those who have never listened to you before?
It is a direct representation of the random thoughts I have on a daily basis. I delve more in the realm of hip-hop, but I am in no way a hip-hop artist. I am simply a musician. There is real dialogue in my songs. There is a 70/30 split of ignorance and enlightenment found in my music – 70% enlightenment. I use a lot of melody and pride myself on insightful, clever and descriptive lyrics.

What made you want to get into music?
Hearing music of all different genres made me want to create music. I heard how most music was about feeling and dealing with those feelings – it’s very healing. Knowing that I could heal or help people with my music and that my voice could be heard by anyone who stumbled upon it is exciting. It’s also defined me in some way and the decision to create it for the masses came after I went to see a Jay-Z concert.

INTERVIEW: Charlie Siren

image
Charlie Siren are a rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band, who will be celebrating the release of their new EP this coming October, are steadily gaining a following for themselves across the US and I was lucky enough to talk to them about everything from their music to their upcoming tour with Let Yourself Go.

How would you describe Charlie Siren to those who have never listened to the band before?
It always depends on who we’re talking to, but, in the most basic terms, we play fast, aggressive alternative-rock.

Out of all the genres of music out there, what is it about punk that draws you in?
We feel it’s one of the most honest genres of music - there’s no glamour or bullshit. It’s fast and passionate and in-your-face.

INTERVIEW: Nikk Banos of Defy You Stars

image
Defy You Stars are an alternative-rock band from Denver, Colorado. Originally the acoustic project of frontman Nikk Banos, the group have been steadily gaining a following with their post-hardcore infused rock. With a recent appearance on the Vans Warped Tour and an upcoming full-length, the guys are in for a busy end of the year. Recently, I was able to discuss it all with Banos.

How would you describe your music to those who haven’t listened to Defy You Stars before?
We’re really a hybrid of a lot of genres and bands we like. We’ve been called similar to All Time Low, Sleeping With Sirens and a few others. We take a lot of influence from pop, indie, alternative and pop-punk bands, but we have a few screaming parts here and there just because we love bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Underoath, A Day To Remember and so on.

Who were your musical influences growing up and how do you think they’ve helped develop the band’s sound?
My biggest influences were All Time Low, My Chemical Romance, Queen and basically anyone who I thought could write a good song. I know Patrick (our drummer) was a huge Blink-182 and You Me A Six fan, and our bassist Scotty listens to everything from jazz to super aggressive metal. He talks about Victor Wooten and John Legend a lot.

Recently, I’ve been big into John Mayer. Patrick and I are both fanning over 5 Seconds of Summer and we all love the 1975 to death. We just really like to see how different musicians get a message across and listening to different styles and seeing different approaches has helped us define our own styles by mixing and adding up. Musicians all kind of learn from each other.
