INTERVIEW: Malcolm Sanderson of Through These Words

Through these words are a metalcore band from St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada. With the release of their latest album, Revision, this four-piece are shaping up to be one of the province’s most promising acts and I was able to discuss their year with drummer Malcolm Sanderson.

Let’s start with an introduction: how would you describe Through These Words to those who have never listened to the band before?
Our sound has changed over time. Our first EP, Challenger, had a southern, metalcore feel [whilst] our newest release, Revision, differs with every song, as there are a bunch of different aspects like hardcore, metalcore and punk.

What made you want to get into music?
I grew up in a musical family. My father and brother are both guitar players and my mom used to be a pianist, so I was always around music. I just kind of found my way to drumming over time.

Out of all the genres out there, what is it about metalcore that appeals to you?
I really love the energy. I always find there is so much emotion and power that’s put into a lot of heavier songs that I can really connect to.

You played this year’s SCENE FEST in St. Catherines. How was it?
This year’s SCENE FEST in St. Catherines was amazing. We played on the outdoor Mishun stage with bands like Liferuiner, Structure and Partycat, and had a great time. Overall, SCENE was one of the best for me. It was different though, because it was a two-day festival instead of just one, but it was fantastic – so many amazing bands!

Besides your performance, what else would you say was memorable about the festival?
For myself, the most memorable part was seeing Monster Truck because they rule.

You released your new album, Revision, earlier this month. What was the recording process like?
It was amazing. We went to Bay City, Michigan and recorded seven songs. We got to stay with our producer’s in-laws and they were amazing hosts. It was a great three weeks and we are extremely happy with all of the songs.

How does Revision compare to your previous releases?
Challenger was very southerny, [whilst] Revision is more riffy and melodic.

You released the album’s lead single, “Reliant”, this past August. How has the response been thus far?
The reception has been very positive – lots of good feedback!

What message do you hope to spread through your music?
Our main message is to let people know they aren’t alone with how they’re feeling and to never give up.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened at a show?
I haven’t had anything weird happen. Something funny that’s happened is that, one time, I broke a stick and part of it flew up in the air and hit my guitarist in the face.

What’s one thing you would tell your younger self?
Never let people’s opinions of what you choose to do with your life bum you out.

What’s the best show you’ve been to as a band?
Definitely Underoath’s final tour. I went to the Toronto date [and it was] the best show ever.

What would you be doing if you weren’t in a band?
I have never thought about that, so I really have no idea.

Any last words?
Thank you to everyone who’s supported Through These Words. If you want to take a listen to our new album, Revision, it’s out on our Bandcamp!

You can find Through These Words’ music on Bandcamp, and make sure to stay up-to-date with them via Facebook and Twitter.
