Review: Young Guns - I Want Out (Single)

image
“I Want Out” is the lead single off of Young Guns’ upcoming third album. The rock five-piece, who have a solid following across the pond, are teasing a sound that’s lighter than their previous works and I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s loving it.

Before I jump into this review, I would like to state that Bones, Young Guns’ second album, is one of my all-time favourites. Two years after its release, I still can’t get enough of it and I don’t see that fact changing anytime soon. Due to my love for that album, I was a little bit worried about Young Guns’ follow up. Would they keep the sound on Bones or would they alter it? Would the melodies still be catchy or would the band do a complete 180° with their sound? Obviously, I had a lot of questions, but if “I Want Out” is any indiction, then I’m more than sure I’m going to absolutely fall in love with album #3.

The song begins with a pop-esque entrance that segways into what can only be described as an explosion of rock sound as vocalist Gustav Wood begins to captivate listeners with his powerful vocals. It’s an immediate entrance into what Young Guns fans expect of the band and a sign that Young Guns are keeping their base sound while branching out into other areas. Right off the bat, it’s easy to tell this song is about a relationship that isn’t necessarily the best - I mean, one can tell that from just reading the song’s title - and you can hear the power and emotion in both Wood’s voice and the band’s music as the song continues.

The chorus continues the explosion heard at the beginning. Bringing in gang vocals - side note, who doesn’t love gang vocals - it’s easily the best part of the song. Wood’s vocals are drowned at times by the instruments (not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion, but to each their own), with their strength and intensity rising as the chorus continues on. Fast-forward to the bridge, the song slows down to what reminds the listener of a pop song they would hear on the radio. It has the underlying quick-pace Young Guns are known for, but brings a softness not normally seen in their music. It’s a nice change and makes the final performance of the chorus that much more grand. The changes in volume and tempo allow the song to end on a high note and one that’ll keep listeners (like myself) hitting repeat time and time again.

So what’s my verdict? I love “I Want Out”. It’s a catchy and power-filled song that I can easily picture myself fist-pumping and going crazy to if I were to hear it live. While it’s not as heavy or as well-written as Young Guns’ previous work (it’s a little repetitive), it’s still a great effort and one that’s showing me Young Guns are allowing themselves to try new things. It still carries with it the powerful vocals, energetic melodies and intense vibe Young Guns are known for and I believe it to be an excellent way of introducing listeners to the next stage of the band’s career. The only question I have now is when’s the new album coming out? The anticipation is killing me!
