#MusicMonday: June 20-26

It’s been a whirlwind of a week, hasn’t it? Not only did Warped Tour officially kick off in Texas, but nostalgia hit big time, with a ton of old favourites releasing new music. From Fall Out Boy to Relient K, it was a week dedicated to the OG fans, and we’ve rounded it all up for you and put it in a nice little package.
No need to thanks us.
Relient K - “Mrs Hippopotamuses”
Oh, Relient K, how we love you so. Tell us, how do you manage to come up with such lovely songs?
“Mrs. Hippopotamuses’” is the latest track the band have offered fans off their upcoming album, Free For Air, and it’s one that has us excited for the release. With a summery vibe (perfect timing, if you ask us) and lyrics discussing Ohio, it’s a song that’s easy to listen to and that is sure to appeal to both old and new fans.
Fall Out Boy ft. Missy Elliott - Ghostbusters Theme
The new Ghostbusters film is set for release this July and who better to recreate the franchise’s theme song than scene stapes Fall Out Boy, with a little help from Missy Elliott, of course.
While the film might not be garnering the best opinions before its release, we hope FOB’s take on the theme helps turn people around. Quite different from the original version (the movie was release 30 years ago), the band’s take features their newfound pop-esque sound, and we’ve had it on repeat all week.
Blink-182 - “No Future”
Blink-182 have been treating us to a whole host of new music leading up to the release of their album, California. Last week we were introduced to “Bored To Death” and this week we received “No Future”.
The track continues to show how perfect a fit Matt Skiba is in the band, with his vocals coming out pretty strong and melding with Blink’s sound well. And yes, while it might not stand up to some of the band’s previous work, the song is still one hell of a listen and it has us hyped for July 1.
Juliet Simms - “Phoenix”
Juliet Simms (or should we call her Juliet Biersack?) is back in a big way, announcing her new EP, From The Grave, which is set for release July 15.
The EP’s lead single, “Phoenix”, features an acoustic-pop sound with a hint of folk, and the overall sound is one that melds well with Simms’ voice. It’s a track we know will appeal to fans both old and new, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the EP has to offer.
Yellowcard - “Rest In Peace”
Before we end this week’s #MusicMonday, we felt we should discuss Yellowcard’s breakup. Earlier this week, the band announced they would be parting ways following the release of their upcoming self-titled album and an accompanying world tour. To make the announcement, they presented us with “Rest In Peace”.
The track’s music video is a beautiful collection of the band throughout the years and the song is a beautiful one, done in typical Yellowcard fashion. The guys are leaving the scene the way they entered it, with music that has meaning, and the song is a beautiful tribute to everything they’ve accomplished. We’re going to miss them.
