#MusicMonday: May 16-22

Is it just us or has May been a stellar month for music? Bands like Issues, Pierce The Veil and Against The Current have released new albums and many more have been teasing fans with hard-hitting and infectious singles. This week, it was hard to narrow down our choices to just five, but we think we’ve done a decent job. Trust us, listen to the music below and you’ll easily find new bands to jam to in the car.

1. Real Friends - “Mokena”

Real Friends will be releasing their sophomore album, In My Head, on May 27 via Fearless Records, so expect them to appear on our list next week. But for now, let us introduce you to “Mokena”, the latest track the band are streaming off the record.

Featuring the band’s signature pop-punk, the track also gives listeners instances of light pop and shoe gaze, which come together to create a track that’s instantly a hit. The song is a step up from those heard on Maybe This Place Is The Same And We’re Just Changing, and it has us excited for In My Head. It’s sure to be one of the best albums of the year.

2. Against The Current - In Our Bones

Against The Current are currently streaming the album via Spotify.

In Our Bones is the debut album from Fueled By Ramen’s Against The Current. Originating as a covers band on YouTube, the band have grown into their own entity and one that knows how to produce great pop-rock.

In Our Bones features 12 tracks of feel good and summer-esque pop-rock tracks, with the band discussing love, relationships and embracing one’s personality and what makes them unique. Vocalist Chrissy Costanza shines, hitting notes many could only dream of, leading the band to be one of the shining lights in today’s scene.

If the album is any indication, Against The Current are set to be Fueled By Ramen’s next big band. Who knows, they could be the label’s next Paramore. They definitely have the talent.

3. Dashboard Confessional - “May”

Did you know that it’s been almost seven years since we last had a new track from Dashboard Confessional? Yes, we haven’t had new music from the band since the Myspace days! Thankfully, it looks like we’ll have a taste of new music soon, starting with “May”.

The track has yet to be released officially, but the band have posted a video of vocalist Chris Carrabba performing it acoustically, and it’s as if the band had never left us. “May” screams Dashboard Confessional, from the lyrics to the music, with instances of new age influences thrown throughout.

Imagine what the track will sound like when performed by the full band? We can’t wait.

4. Issues - Headspace

The long-awaited sophomore album from Issues has arrived and features the band going above and beyond the music previously heard from them. The band’s best album to date, it features a melding of genres that’s seamlessly done. When paired with vocals from Tyler Carter and Michael Bohn, the tracks are elevated to new heights.

Lyrically, the album covers a variety of topics, straying away from the norms of the post-hardcore scene, and sees the band stepping to the forefront of the scene.

If you have yet to, definitely give Headspace a listen. It’ll definitely sate your need for some hard-hitting post-hardcore.

5. Beartooth - “Hated”

We featured Beartooth in our debut #MusicMonday, but seriously, it’s hard not to include the band when they’re releasing music like “Hated”. Featuring lyrics that fans will easily relate to, the track sees Caleb Shomo putting aside screams, allowing for it to have more of an impact. Musically, “Hated” is heavy and hard-hitting, with melodic instances thrown without.

Caleb Shomo is a talent to be reckoned with and Beartooth are definitely one of the top bands in the scene. We’re excited to see what they’ll release next.
