Welcome to #MusicMonday, our new weekly series that rounds-up our favourite singles, EPs, performances and albums from the previous week and presents them to you in a nice, neat package. Whether you’re a fan of infectious pop, hard-hitting rock or are interested in finding your new acoustic fave, there’s something for everyone on our list. So grab your headphones and a pen and paper, and prepare to discover some great music.

1. Crystalyne - “Air I Breathe”

It’s been two years since we’ve had new music from Toronto’s Crystalyne. The pop-rock four-piece released The Remedy EP in 2014 with resounding success, with its infectious instrumentals and fun lyrics resonating with listeners. Now, the band are back with “Air I Breathe”. The track is textbook Crystalyne, with its pop hooks and strong vocals, and it also features more mature lyrical content, with vocalist Marissa Dattoli explaining

“The contrast between the feel of the song and the lyrical content really mirrors the split I feel in myself most days. I was in therapy last year for depression and anxiety. On the outside, I was still my usual happy self, but on the inside, I wasn’t connected with anything and I had all of these intrusive negative thoughts.”

If you want new music on your iPod, definitely give this track a listen.

2. Away Days - Debut EP

Away Days premiered their debut EP via Kerrang! Magazine.

Away Days is an alternative rock band from the UK. Made up of ¾ of the members of Blitz Kids (Jono Yates, Nic Montgomery and Matt Freer), the trio are a band that sees Yates taking the lead on vocals and lyrics, and creating something both Blitz Kids fans and new listeners are sure to enjoy. The band’s debut EP was released on May 6 and features four tracks of alternative rock that depict the battle of mental illness, as Yates explains:

“I guess we’ve tried to take pretty dark and taboo subjects like depression and anxiety, especially in ‘Give Me My Life Back’, and put them to super uplifting music. That song is purely about suffering from depression and being really fucking fed up of it having a hold on your life, and it’s basically just me screaming ‘FUCK YOU, DEPRESSION’ because it’s literally the worst thing in the world.”

It’s good music for those looking to expand their playlist.

3. Hit The Lights - Just To Get Through To You EP

We’d be lying if we said that Hit The Lights’ last album, Summer Bones, wasn’t one of our all-time favourite albums. The 2015 release was one of the best of the year and featured some pretty killer tracks. So, obviously, we’re super into Just To Get Through To You. The EP features acoustic renderings of songs from Summer Bones and allows us to experience a slower, more stripped down side to Hit The Lights. If you want something that’s easy to listen to, we suggest you give the release a listen.

4. Beartooth - “Loser”

Earlier this week, Beartooth treated fans to a brand new track, and the hype around it is making the anticipation for the band’s sophomore album even greater. Titled “Loser”, it’s the perfect showcase of Caleb Shomo’s ability to blend melody and heaviness in a seamless way. The heavy is heavy and the choruses are melodic while still featuring strong bass and drums, which don’t allow the song to become too soft. Overall, it’s a killer track and one that all post-hardcore fans need on their iPod.

5. Andy Black - The Shadow Side

Andy Black is currently streaming the album via Spotify.

The Shadow Side is the highly anticipated debut solo album from Black Veil Brides frontman, Andy Black. A 13-track released filled with pop-infused rock, the album allows for Black’s songwriting skills and deep vocals to really shine. Featuring a sound that’s inspired by the likes of Billy Idol and Bruce Springsteen, it’s a different direction than that seen from Black Veil Brides, and we’re definitely big fans of it.

Standout tracks include “Drown My Out” and opener “Homecoming King”. Give it a chance, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
