Brooke Hummel is a 16-year-old pop musician from Charlotte, North Carolina. With the release of her new and emotional song, “Cruel”, Brooke is looking to help others and bring awareness to bullying. Recently, Legendary Kids Press was able to speak with Brooke about the track and her beginnings in music.

How would you describe your music to those who have never listened to you before?

Compared to most other artist songs, mine are set apart because, whenever I do an original song of mine, I had to have been feeling that certain setting, atmosphere or vibe at the time. All my music if based off experience and times I’ve had.

How did you get your start in music?

When I was around 11-years-old, I told my parents I wanted to be a singer. My parents have always been very supportive of me and my music, so they set me up in my local church choir and I started singing there, gaining some knowledge and then posting videos to YouTube. After I had posted a few videos, my current manager, Jermaine Spencer, found me and reached out saying they wanted to sign me on. It’s been all uphill [and] really great since then!

Who were your musical inspirations growing up?

Growing up, my parents taught me one thing extremely unique that most parents don’t teach their kids: appreciate all types of music and really appreciate all the time it took for that song to come together. So, for me, my musical inspirations were artists ranging all the way from Carrie Underwood to Michael Jackson, even John Denver.

At 16-years-old, you’re still quite young. What would you say is the hardest thing about being in the music industry at such a young age?

The hardest thing about being a younger artist is definitely getting underestimated. I can be holding a conversation with someone and they seem really interested and when I tell them I’m 16, they lose interest and think that I’m playing a game.

You recently released the music video for your single, “Cruel”. How has the fan reaction been thus far?

The fan reaction has been amazing! I try to read everyone’s comments and I haven’t seen one negative one! [It] makes me extremely happy!

The track discusses bullying. Why is the topic such an important one to you?

The track is extremely important to me because I have personally experienced a lot of bullying myself, through my music journey and being a student.

What advice would you give to someone who’s being bullied, but doesn’t know what to do about it?

When you are going through bullying, it is very common that often times you will feel alone. The best thing I have to say is take yourself as far away as you can from those individuals, whether it be blocking the person(s) online or even leaving the room they are in. Also, surround yourself with the ones who love you and lift you up.

Will we be hearing anymore new music from you this year?

Absolutely! I find it extremely important to steadily keep content coming and posted. We have some covers coming and some singles.

Which musician or band would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Shawn Mendez! He is such an amazing artist and I love what he brings to his shows, as far as fanbase and talent!

Do you have anything you’d like to say to your listeners?

To my listeners, thank you so much for all of your support. I wouldn’t be doing what I was doing if I didn’t have you constantly listening and supporting me! I love all of you!
