Review: Grayscale - What We’re Missing

image

What We’re Missing is the latest album from Philadelphia pop-punk and alternative rock band, Grayscale. A release that effortlessly blends the two genres together in a way that’s melodic and focused, What We’re Missing is sure to be the album that launches the band into the eyes of many.

What We’re Missing begins with “Tense”, a song that deceptively begins with an acoustic guitar and supporting drums before bursting into a full-band aesthetic. It’s followed by the State Champs-esque “Palette”, which is easily the album’s most melodic track.

“Midwest” and “Say Something” follow, showcasing the band’s pop-punk roots, with the former bringing about a sound that is strongly reminiscent of the current scene and the latter allowing listeners to really appreciate the band’s pop sentiments. They’re followed by “Change”, the record’s best showing. With its emotional lyrics and soft sound, it shows a new side to Grayscale, one that sees the band delving deep within themselves.

“Catholic” and “Irish Curtain” showcase the band’s lyrical ability. Throughout the album, listeners are treated to honest and emotional content. It’s clear that Grayscale wanted to open up on this album and it’s safe to say they accomplished that task. Closing track “August Love” ends with a similar pop note to the earlier “Bloom”, with the track showing real potential of being the album’s next single.

Overall, What We’re Missing could quite possibly one of the best pop-punk releases of 2016. Featuring a melodic sound, open lyrics and an overall focused direction, it’s easy to see that Grayscale left no stone unturned this time around. Music fans better keep an eye out for the band because it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot more of them this year.
