Review: Day Old Hate - First Light (EP)

image

First Light is the sophomore EP from Leeds alt-rockers, Day Old Hate. A release that features five tracks of melodic and hard-hitting rock music, First Light is sure to appease old fans while bringing the band a wealth of new listeners.

Beginning with the drum-based track “Don’t Chase Me”, it’s easy to hear the type of vibe Day Old Hate are going for with First Light. With a rock-centric sound that blends with the occasional melodic guitar riff, it’s a good intro to the release. It leads into the slower and more guitar-driven “Fifteen”, one of the EP’s weaker offerings (if you could even call it that). Listeners can tell that the band primarily focused on the instrumentation with this track, with their hard work paying off especially toward the end.

The EP’s title track is a throwback of sorts, reminding listeners of Day Old Hate’s previous work while still showcasing newer, more intricate elements. It seamlessly enters into “Minutes-Hours-Days”, almost as if the tracks were meant to be paired together. The band’s best showing, it features prominent guitar, strong supporting drums and an over-arching bass line that ties everything together. When followed by closing track, “Secrets”, it’s easy to see that the band wanted to end First Light on a melodic note, a move that greatly works in their favour.

Overall, First Light is an improvement for Day Old Hate and is the band’s best release to date. Through its five tracks, listeners can hear progression and growth, whether it be through the tighter instrumentation, cleaner vocals or the maturity of the lyrics sung. First Light is a stellar release and one any alternative rock fan would be happy to have on their iPod.
