Review: Asking Alexandria - The Black (Single)

Asking Alexandria are back with the hard-hitting “The Black”. A comeback that shows the band are looking to return to their metalcore and post-hardcore roots, the track is sure to appease fans both old and new.
Before listening, it should be noted that “The Black” is nothing like the tracks heard on Asking Alexandria’s last album, From Death To Destiny. Whilst boasting a rock sound, the record was something far from the music the band had built themselves upon. “The Black” returns them to their roots, offering the heavy sound everyone knows them for and continuing the trend seen in “I Won’t Give In” and “Undivided”.
“The Black” is a very emotional track for Asking Alexandria, as past lyrics have depicted drinking, sex and drug use. It doesn’t cover any of this. About the departure of former frontman Danny Worsnop, it features lyrics such as the constantly repeated “I need to cut you out” and “All my life / I’ve needed you with me / You’ve always let me down”, showcasing the negative feelings guitarist and lyricist Ben Bruce had regarding the situation. Match such lyrics with heavy drums and bass, and you’ve got a single that’s sure to be an instant hit.
Overall, “The Black” is one of Asking Alexandria’s better tracks. While the band’s return to heavier music might disappoint those who had grown to love the songs on From Death To Destiny, the wider audience will applaud the band for bringing it back and for their renewed enthusiasm. While at times it does fall into the generic, it’s a strong track and one that’ll leave fans eager to hear more.
