Interview: Day Old Hate

Day Old Hate are an alternative rock quintet from Leeds. With the release of their debut single earlier in the year. the band are looking to take over the UK rock scene with their blend of catchy, yet hard-hitting tracks. Recently, Legendary Kids Press was able to catch up with the band to discuss their debut, as well as their plans for the future.
How would you describe Day Old Hate to those who have never listened to the band before?
We’re a band who draw on modern day influences, such as Alexisonfire, Mallory Knox, Lower Than Atlantis, Young Guns, Bring Me The Horizon, etc. We would describe our sound as alternative rock, but definitely like to keep things very British.
What made you want to get involved in music? Was there a specific artist or record that pushed you to pursue it for a living?
To be honest, we all have different reasons! But it has to be based on the love of performing and writing, developing our influences into songs we think give Day Old Hate the sound that [we] have now.
You released your debut single, “Tides”, a few months ago. How has the response been?
We released “Tides” at the start of the year to show our fans that we meant business this year. A few weeks after putting it on the BBC Introducing uploader, we had a call to say it would be featured on the Radio 1 playlist! To be a part of the BBC Introducing team is an absolutely dream come true and they helped us get our music out to more people, and it’s gone from strength to strength since!
We then released “Living Without You” later on in the year and the response for that has been even better. These two songs have especially gone down so well at our recent shows, as the crowds are always up for singing along, which always feels extra special.
You recently finished up recording an EP. Do you have any word on when it will be released?
TBA. We have a lot of things going on in the DOH camp. Our new management team is really proactive with making sure this EP gets the hype it deserves, so we can’t say when. But it should hopefully be later this year!
Is there anything you can tell us about it? What would you say was your favourite part of the recording process?
All we can say is that the songs are the best we’ve ever written! They incorporate everything we want to express as a band and we all know that these songs will go down well with our current and new fans.
Our favourite part of the process was probably working with Romesh Dodangoda. He was a pleasure to work with and it actually felt like he was part of the band! He also took us out in Cardiff, which was very eventful…
You recently finished touring with A Year Today. What would you say were some of your tour highlights?
Our headline show in Leeds. We pretty much sold it out and everyone was loving our set, which was amazing. It was also our first proper UK tour and to gain that experience in prep for our next set of tours is something that we’ll always look back on with fond memories.
What are the band’s plans for the remainder of 2015?
We’ll be playing shows [and] touring up and down the country. Releasing the new EP is obviously a massive priority too, so we’ll be announcing all of that at some point soon!
What do you hope to accomplish through music?
Hopefully a successful career! We’re all putting a lot into the band, so we want to go as far as possible - as long as we’re enjoying ourselves. Then we’ll continue Day Old Hate for as long as we can!
Where do you see Day Old Hate in five years?
On a headline world tour, playing main stage [at] Reading & Leeds [and] releasing our second album.
Final question: what’s your go-to karaoke song?
“I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness.
You can find Day Old Hate’s music on iTunes, and be sure to follow the band on Facebook and Twitter.
