Review: Bring Me The Horizon - That’s The Spirit

image

That’s The Spirit is the eagerly awaited fifth full-length from British metalcore band, Bring Me The Horizon. Described as a “celebration of depression”, it features the band bringing something new to the table, progressing into a nu-metal era that appears to be working in their favour.

Starting off the album is track “Doomed”. Instrumentally and vocally, it brings an electronic vibe that can be compared to “Sleepwalking”, which appeared on 2013′s Sempiternal. It’s followed by “Happy Song”, a track heavily showcasing drums and guitar riffs, with a beat that’ll have you pumping your fist into the air. Lyrically, it’s the perfect definition of what That’s The Spirit’s about: overcoming depression and making the most negative experiences into positive thoughts. This is seen in lyrics like “But if you sing along / A little fucking louder / To a happy song / You’ll be just fine”. Music for some is an escape and that’s exactly what “Happy Song” portrays.

“Throne” is a very electronic-based song, with the beat being mixed with a fast-paced drumming pattern and a combination of piano, guitar and background chanting. Lyrically, it can be seen as an anthem to get back up and fight against those who try and knock you down, about growing stronger and believing you can get through anything life may throw at you.

“True Friends” is a track everyone can relate to. Whether you’re going through a bad friendship, or even a relationship, solace can be found in the smooth guitar riffs, hard-rock tune and sing-along lyrics. It’s followed by the slower “Follow You”, which could be compared to Sempiternal Deluxe’s “Deathbeds” (and possibly viewed as a follow-up). It’s a very romantic track, with Sykes singing about expressing feelings for a significant other and reassuring oneself that that person is the only one for them.

“What You Need” is a very upbeat and fast-paced, something you can drum along to during a car ride. However, lyrically it can be seen as triggering, and overall, it doesn’t stand out as much as the other tracks on That’s The Spirit.

Following is “Avalanche”. Starting out with a hard-rock rhythm filled with interchanging paces of guitar riffs and a steady drumbeat, it’s easily one of the catchiest on the whole album, with lyrics like “It’s like an avalanche / And I feel myself going under / Cause the weight of it’s like hands around my neck.”

“Run” is the leading electronic song on the album, featuring elements of pop and a beat similar to that found on “What You Need” (yet lyrically lighter). It’s followed by lead single “Drown”, with its empowering lyrics and alternative rock sound. Definitely one of the album’s best showings, it’s a track anyone can connect with and leave you head-banging to.

One can find “Blasphemy” toward the end of That’s The Spirit. A blast from the past, it sees Bring Me The Horizon tapping into their older metal sound in the form of vibrant guitar riffs and foot-stomping beats. Lyrically, it’s a bit on the religious side, with Sykes singing about faith and preaching.

Closing out the album is “Oh No”, and it’s definitely one of the more pop/dance/emo tracks, both instrumentally and lyrically. Sykes sings from the mindset of one overcoming drug addiction (as he did) and lyrically, he is trying to talk to someone who is an addict about becoming clean.

Overall, That’s The Spirit takes on a new direction that appears to have songs for everyone to enjoy, regardless of whether or not you prefer Bring Me The Horizon’s old or new material. It’s a collection of well-rounded, dynamic tracks that you’ll surely not get enough of.
