Interview: Blake Dawson of EverSay

image

We recently spoke with EverSay vocalist Blake Dawson. The trio, consisting of Dawson, bassist Kyle McDonald and guitarist Gabe Bullard, won Jacksonville’s Battle of the Bands for this summer’s Vans Warped Tour, and we were able to speak about the band’s inspirations, their thoughts on playing Warped and what we have to look forward to from them.

How did you come up with the name “EverSay”, and what genre would you say the band’s music falls under?

After a long day in the studio recording our self-titled EP. We were all very delirious, eating dinner at a local bar & grill and someone said, “That’s the stupidest thing you could ever say.” My wheels immediately started turning. We tweaked the two words into one with the “E” and “S” capitalized and Bob’s your uncle!

Our genres would be considered mostly rock, pop, [and] alternative.

What artists do you feel influence your music the most, and who would you like to tour with in the future?

twenty one pilots are one of our favourites right now. We would love to tour with them one day!

Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? Also, please describe your songwriting process.

The way I see it is there is inspiration everywhere, you just have to open yourself to it. I mostly write from personal experiences; everything you hear is real and authentic.

I start out with lyrics - they normally provide the vibe of the song. Then I start playing around on my acoustic guitar to find the perfect progression. I write a skeleton of the song, record a demo, show it to the guys [and] then we lay it down!

You recently won Battle of the Bands and played the Jacksonville, FL Vans Warped Tour date on July 6th. Can you please describe your thoughts pre-Warped and how you prepared for your set?

We were extremely excited to play! We’ve grown up going to Warped Tour. We love the bands that were playing and we couldn’t wait to be a part of it this year!

We knew that we only have 25 minutes to play, so we wanted to make sure that it was high energy the entire time. We wanted it to be an EverSay show you wouldn’t forget. It definitely was!

Describe your day on Warped Tour in three words, and from finding out set times and getting around the venue to performing and so on, what would you say was the most challenging event that happened?

Hot, electrifying [and] fun! We were very happy with our set time! We had an amazing crowd! Our set was so much fun! Everyone was singing along and having a blast! We couldn’t have asked for anything more!

The most challenging event that day was setting up our merch tent.

Compare your pre-Warped thoughts to your post-tour thoughts.

It was everything we thought it would be and the fact that we met so many of our idols was so eye-opening for us!

In terms of new and upcoming things, do you have anything you’d like to share with us, whether it be a new album, tour or even single?

We are about to get into the studio to record our first full length album. We will be working with an amazing Australian producer, and we are very excited to show the world what we have been perfecting for the past couple of years. We have come into our own from being on the road and gaining new fans all over the world. This is just the beginning and everyone needs to hop onboard because it’s going to be one hell of a ride.

In the future, why should fans check out your music or go see the band live? What do you hope they take from it, and what song do you recommend they check out first?

No one has ever regretted checking us out or seeing us live. For us, it’s all about the fans. The people who support our music just because they like it. At our live shows, it’s all about the positive energy and connecting with fans. We stay until we talk to the very last person in our merch line.

“Pour Me Out” is our latest single!

We also spoke with a fan of EverSay, @RJBends on Twitter, about her first reaction to the band, how she found them and her overall thoughts.

How did you first hear about/find out about EverSay?

They gave me a CD at the Future Hearts Tour at the House Of Blues in Orlando, FL. I didn’t listen to it [until] months after I received it - only then [did] I realize they were great.

What were your reactions to first listening to the band and finding out they were playing your Warped date?

When I first listened to them, I was like, “This is a female singer. Oh, god, no.” Then, I was like, “These guys are amazing.” I listened to more of their stuff and realized how amazing they were. They gave me chills, honestly.

When I found out they were playing my Warped date, I made sure I saw them and knew what time they were doing a meet up. I got to meet them and their set was amazing. They sound just as great live as they do on CD!

What song off of their demo CD got you hooked on them and their sound?

Their original song “This Time” and their cover of David Guetta’s “Titanium”.

I personally met EverSay at the We Like It Quiet Tour in Orlando, FL. Blake gave me their CD and I listened to it as soon as I could get on my laptop. My favourite song of their’s so far is their cover of Pierce The Veil’s “King For A Day”. It really blew me away how Blake transformed the originally screaming-based song into a clean rock hit that anyone can jam out to!

You can purchase EverSay’s music through Bandcamp, and be sure to follow the band on Facebook and Twitter.
