Review: Asking Alexandria - I Won’t Give In (Single)

“I Won’t Give In” is the latest single from English metalcore band, Asking Alexandria. Released May 27th, it is the band’s first single with new vocalist, Denis Shaforostov, who had previously been the frontman of Ukranian outfits Make Me Famous and Down & Dirty.

Beginning with lowered chanting and a light drumming pattern, “I Won’t Give In” progresses into a full-out guitar and hard rock drum beat, filled with high-pitched screams, low growls and whisper-like clean vocals. Giving fans a teaser of Shaforostov’s vocals and Asking’s new direction, the song is a throwback of sorts, allowing the band’s old style to meld with their new sound.

Personally, I like the direction of “I Won’t Give In”, both lyrically as well as rhythmically, and it can be expected that even greater things are to come. Lyrically, in enforces the sense of watching over someone you deeply care for, making sure you don’t become like them while wishing they would see that what you’re trying to do is for their own benefit. This can be seen in lyrics like “Every breath you take, I watch you slip away. You’re slowly killing yourself. I won’t give in” and “I gave you everything. I never thought we would end up like this. I gave you everything. I can’t let you go, save me please”. With the tempo itself, the hard rock sound has always stuck with the group and it’s surely to continue with Shaforostov at the helm.

Overall, “I Won’t Give In” seems very promising as the lead-in to Asking Alexandria’s new direction, and I personally cannot wait to hear what’s next from them - whether it be a new album or another single.

Be sure to catch them on the Vans Warped Tour all summer long!
