BoyMeetsWorld are a pop-rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio. With an infectious sound that mixes catchy melodies with killer breakdowns, the band are becoming one of the scene’s fastest rising stars. Legendary Kids Press was recently able to speak with frontman Craig Sulken about the band’s upcoming album, their beginnings in music and their spot on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour.

How would you describe BoyMeetsWorld to those who have never listened to the band before?

Fun, energetic pop rock.

Given the band’s name, I have to ask: who’s your favourite Boy Meets World character?

Haha, uh oh… Nobody in the band has actually watched the show before, besides Brad [Sulken, bass]. I know, I’m sorry.

What made you want to pursue music for a living?

Well, there’s a long story behind this, but basically, I moved away to Florida for college, which was my first time really experiencing the “real world”. After a few months, I was pretty quick to realize that I could be doing whatever I wanted to be doing and didn’t have to go to college and get a job I hated. So I decided to go with my gut and follow my passion, and here we are now.

You’ve announced you’ll be releasing your debut album, Become Someone, on June 16th. How would you say it differs from Do What’s Best For You?

Well, for one, it’s a full-length instead of an EP. Do What’s Best For You had six songs, including the intro, and Become Someone has twelve, including a short interlude. It doesn’t differ from the EP too much, besides more variety. Both releases are great, in my opinion, and I can’t wait for people to hear the new album.

What was the recording process like? Is there anything you did differently this time?

We recorded at the same studio as the EP with our good friend, Eric Tuffendsam, [of] Moonlight Studios. It’s always a blast being there, [as it] the experience as a whole.

No, I don’t think we did anything too differently this time.

What tracks are you most excited for fans to hear?

All of them, straight up.

You’ll be playing the entire Vans Warped Tour this summer for the first time. What are you most excited about, in regards to it?

Just being out there in the heat everyday, staying up late, waking up early and talking to as many people as possible all day long. We love the Vans Warped Tour and everything it entails. It’s rough, but always worth it and [is] the best experience.

Warped’s pretty gruelling, with the heat and constant travelling. Is there anything you guys are doing to prepare?

Well, unlike last year when we were catering and following the tour, we hired a friend of ours to drive every night, which is going to be a huge help. We also traded out 12-passenger van for a shuttle bus and build bunk beds in the back, and there’s like ten times more room than we had last summer. So basically, as far as “living”, we’re pretty stoked.

We’ll definitely be bringing a ton of sunscreen with us as well.

Are there any bands you’re excited to see?

I’m excited to see all of the bands and love seeing what each band has to bring and offer. We’re excited to see and hang out with some friends from last summer, including Neck Deep, Icon For Hire, Beartooth and a few more.

What do you hope fans take from your music?

I really hope that people can listen to our music and can connect to it on a personal level because that’s really what music is all about: getting you through the good time and [the] bad.

Final question: what’s your go-to karaoke song?

I’ve never actually sang karaoke before, but if I had to, I would definitely sing “Pour Some Sugar On Me” by Def Leppard.
