Review: The Truth Today - Self-Titled (EP)

image

London, Ontario quintet The Truth Today are set to release their new self-titled EP tomorrow (March 27th) and Legendary Kids Press was given an exclusive sneak peek at what is sure to be one of the best local releases of the year.

The Truth Today’s style is one that blends the likes of metalcore and post-hardcore in a way that allows the best aspects of both genres to shine. Building on where 2013′s Bear left off, the band’s self-titled showcases a wealth of sound, one that’s sure to build their audience tenfold.

EP opener “Bourgeois” is the heaviest offering on the release, featuring an emphasis on John Birch’s unclean vocals, as well as the scathing impact of Zach Taylor’s drumming. It’s contrasted by “Bespin” and closer “Thirty Below”, which demonstrate a more equal balance of ground-shaking hardcore and infectious melodies, often incorporating the slightest electronics to help them shine.

Vocally, The Truth Today offers a lot. Birch’s unclean vocals show a noticeable improvement from the band’s last release, with him often matching his growls with the instrumentation, while secondary vocalist Josh Ford offers up some of the best clean vocals I’ve heard in quite a while, with him hitting high notes without a hint of auto tune as support. His voice goes well with Red Handed Denial’s Lauren Babic, who cameos on fan favourite, “Barely Breathing”.

For those looking to know which track truly stands out, look no further than “Bipolar Vortex”. It’s the best example of the quintet’s use of dual vocals, which helps get across the song’s message. Featuring lyrics like “Fall into the depths reaching for the stars”, it’s a song many will be able to relate to and gather something from, and is overall a track I feel will become a new favourite for many.

Overall, The Truth Today is an EP that brings to the table everything a heavy music fan could ask for. Featuring everything from mosh-inducing breakdowns to soaring melodies, there’s something for everyone on this release, and it’s definitely a collection that’ll see The Truth Today garnering the attention of many. Make sure to keep your eyes out for these guys because they’re gonna blow up in 2015.
