INTERVIEW: Jaret Reddick of Bowling For Soup

Bowling For Soup, the Texan pop-punk group, are a staple of music from the early 2000s. Recently having released their firstgreatest hits compilation, Songs People Actually Liked, the band are bringing their career to a close on a celebratory note. Vocalist and guitarist Jaret Reddick answered some of my questions regarding the album and pop-punk in general, and also recommended a variety of bands for fans to check out.

How were the songs for the album chosen? Was it done according to sales or was it a handpicked selection of your personal favorites?

It was a combination of the two… That and fan favorites!

Why was the release of Songs People Actually Liked so important to both you and the fans?

I just love hearing the older songs come to life and sound as good as they can. It is an amazing walk down memory lane for me!

Are there any new bands that are a part of the pop-punk scene that you would suggest to those who have been listening to your music throughout the years?

There are a few bands that I think everyone missed… Everyone should check out Flashlight Brown! As for bands that are still together: The Maine, Nerf Herder and Teenage Bottlerocket!

There’s been a lot of controversy between fans over whether or not artists who are relatively new in the music business – for example, 5 Seconds of Summer, who claim to be pop-punk – actually live up to the genre’s reputation. What are you thoughts on this?

I think people are silly. I never understood what good putting a label on a band really does for anyone. At the end of the day, you [either] like [them] or you don’t. Bowling For Soup got played on pop radio, so, all of a sudden, we weren’t included in a genre we helped create… How were [we] ever not pop-punk?! We are the fucking definition and guess what, we are one of the few bands left standing.

I know the 5SOS guys. They are talented as hell. I think they should just be a pop band and take the money… And the pussy!

What’s the legacy you hope to leave behind both as a band and on fans who have been avidly listening to your music?

I just love that everyone still associates us with realness and fun because that’s what we are!

You can find Songs People Actually Liked on iTunes.
