Review: ROAM - Viewpoint EP

image

On January 27th, ROAM released Viewpoint, their debut EP on Hopeless Records. While it’s a reasonably short release, featuring only four songs, it still demonstrates the great deal of potential the band possesses.

Kicking off the set is “Over Your Head”. This song is a great opener, being your classic pop-punk track with a great beat; lyrically and instrumentally, the song is very strong, particularly during the choruses. It displays all the elements of a good pop-punk track, even including a small breakdown at the end.

Track two on Viewpoint is “Warning Sign”, ROAM’s first single/music video. Again, it proves to have great lyrics, and instrumentally is much better than “Over Your Head”. There are some exceptional guitar parts shown on this track, as well as some pretty great drumbeats.

“519” is a much shorter track and is more of a connection between the “Warning Sign” and the EP’s finale, “Safeguard”. Nonetheless, it still shows ROAM’s ability to create some pretty respectable pop-punk.

As aforementioned, closing out Viewpoint is “Safeguard”, another strong showing from the band. Mixing the louder, faster parts of pop-punk with some soft guitar melodies, it proves to be really effective. The tactic adds another layer to the track and sets it apart from its predecessors. This successful variation makes the song a great closing track and it ties the EP together nicely.

Overall, Viewpoint is a solid pop-punk release, albeit a slightly repetitive one. The tracks do sound reasonably similar, yet are superb and suggest there is still big things to come from ROAM.
