Review: All Time Low - Something’s Gotta Give (Single)

image
All Time Low are a band who have been dominating the alternative music scene for over 10 years now, and as well as the recent announcement of their sixth studio album Future Hearts, the four-piece have premiered the lead single, entitled “Something’s Gotta Give”, on BBC Radio 1.

Initially, the song itself is rather basic, with a reasonably catchy beginning, simple instrument accompaniment and some nice vocal melodies from vocalist Alex Gaskarth. But while it isn’t as upbeat and exciting as the band’s usual work, the verses still possess the ingenious lyrics that Gaskarth is so renowned for, with lines such as “I don’t even know myself, I wish I could be someone else” sure to catch the attention of fans (while the “oh yeah” that follows doesn’t prove to be as achieving).

It’s not until the chorus that the song really picks up. The vocals and harmonies get going and the instruments finally begin to come into play. It’s here where “Something’s Gotta Give” really starts to pack a punch, with it finally reaching the form of the band’s previous work, and this continues on into a more established second verse. This greatly displays All Time Low’s musical capabilities, as new layers and effects really prove how much they’ve built up over the space of their careers, as they show just how capable they are of making a great pop-punk track.

Personally, one of my favourite parts of the song is the bridge, as this minor drop is one of the moments that is able to give me goose bumps every time I listen. This small section really sums up how superb All Time Low’s ability to compose and arrange a song is. Finally, the track finishes with another kick-ass chorus ending with one killer long note to close it admirably.

All Time Low’s last full-length album Don’t Panic was released over two years ago, so it’s safe to say fans have been eagerly awaiting new music. Luckily, the overall response to both “Something’s Gotta Give” and Future Hearts has been has been pretty positive. This song alone has All Time Low fans across the world stoked for the release of the rest of the new album, as well as the upcoming tours the band will be doing in the coming year.
