Review: One Direction - Four

image
One Direction are a group that have been splitting public opinion for the past four years. However, no one can deny that these five boys have taken the pop industry by storm in the short time they’ve been together. While many may still see them as “that cheesy British boy band”, it has to be said that 1D are beginning to win the hearts of many with their new album, Four.

The first track from the album, “Steal My Girl”, has already been a great success for the group as a single and is a great start to the album. It’s a great pop song but also shows a newfound maturity that 1D may have lacked in the past, overall suggesting that this may be the group’s best release to date.

“Ready To Run” and “Fireproof” really show how the band have moved away from the cheesy pop songs they’re known for. Admittedly, they’re not overly dynamic, but it’s the simplicity that makes them great.

The next song is “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”, a catchy track that will have you screaming the lyrics at the top of your lungs by its end. It is one of the more poppy tracks from the album, with its repetitive lyrics and a lively beat, but the song, like many others, definitely has single potential.

Tracks like “No Control” and “Girl Almighty” are happy, upbeat tracks that the band are known for, but feel somewhat overpowered by others on the album. While they’re still great showings, the rest of the track listing possesses much stronger tracks.

The newest single from Four, “Night Changes”, contrasts the style of “Steal My Girl”, yet has proven to be just as much a success. With the music video being released only a matter of days ago, fans’ excitement and love for the track have not lessened in the slightest. The song shows greatness in its simplicity, with soft harmonies being used in place of over the top beats and melodies.

This album shows that 1D are just as good at making slower tracks. “18” and “Fool’s Gold” certainly oppose the upbeat pop tracks that the group are known for. Alongside these is “Spaces”, which is one of the more anthem-like tracks from Four, while also proving to be the most emotional.

“Stockholm Syndrome” really shows the more mature direction the group are moving toward. If you’re able to look past the fact that the lyrics are based around the rather creepy topic of falling in love with your kidnapper, you’ll see that the track is a really great one. It has elements of dance music as well as pop, and shows the group’s new found diversity.

Following on from “Stockholm Syndrome” is “Clouds”, a solid closing track. It sums up the messages that are being voiced throughout the album and shows how the group and their music really have changed for the better. The use of catchy guitar riffs, chants and a strong drum beat help finish off the Four perfectly.
