Review: Bring Me The Horizon - Drown (Single)

The track begins with a light alternative-rock sound that later transforms into a solid rock melody. A far cry from their first three albums, it looks like Bring Me The Horizon are channeling a vibe similar to that found on Sempiternal. Vocalist Oli Sykes ditches his signature raspy screams, instead opting to sing and showcase the song’s lyrical content (which speaks of the world sometimes being too heavy to handle), and the overall instrumentation isn’t as anger-filled or loud as it has been in earlier releases.
“Drown” overall is a catchy and inspired move for Bring Me The Horizon. While recording a song like this would be risky for any heavier band, it seems to have paid off in their favour and should be appealing to both pre- and post-Sempiternal fans. It’s a lot more melodic than any song found in the five-piece’s catalogue and shows they aren’t afraid to take their sound in a new direction. I know some listeners are going to go about calling Bring Me The Horizon “sellouts” for moving in a lighter direction, but honestly, every band needs to progress and grow, and “Drown” shows that these guys aren’t afraid to go with their gut and think outside the box.
“Drown” is essentially an ace in the hole.
