Review: twenty one pilots - Blurryface

Columbus-based duo twenty one pilots are back at it with the release of their new album, Blurryface. Consisting of singer Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dunn, the group has wowed listeners and gained new followers as the result of Blurryface, which showcases a slightly more pop sound than their previous albums, but still maintains the classic twenty one pilots feel.

The opening track, “Heavydirtysoul”, is a pretty accurate representation of the group’s style, with rap verses and a catchy chorus. “Stressed Out” refers to the mysterious concept of Blurryface, referenced by the album title. Overall, the record includes subtle touches of different genres, such as the somewhat reggae feel of “Ride” while stay true to the twenty one pilots style with poetry-esque rap verses. The album also features tracks, such as “Fairly Local”, with it’s genius reverse verses, “Tear In My Heart”, “Doubt” and “Polarize”. It ends on a relatively softer note with “Goner” - an appropriate title for a final track - but the duo still manage to go out with a bang.

Interview: Kaylene Widdoes & Lauren Seveney of Keys & Corridors

Keys & Corridors are an alternative rock band from Akron, Ohio. With the release of their debut EP, Thieves, just around the corner, Legendary Kids Press was able to speak with vocalist Kaylene Widdoes and guitarist Lauren Seveney about the release, the band’s touring schedule and their decision to pursue music for a living.

How would you describe your sound to those who have never listened to Keys & Corridors before?

We get a lot of comparisons to other female-led alt bands, like Paramore and Flyleaf. Whenever we try to describe our sound, we use them as examples. But I think we strive to put a spin on the genre as well. Every band member has come from different musical backgrounds and has played different genres of music, which provides a unique sound to the band as a whole. I also like to tell people that we try to be very deliberate with our lyrics, so expect a nice alternative rock sound with some heart in it!

What made you decide to pursue music for a living?

Lauren Seveney: I have used poetry and songwriting as a release for a long time now. Growing up, it was really difficult for me to express what I was feeling, especially within difficult situations like divorces, not having friends at school, etc. So when I felt like no one was listening to me, I wrote down my pain and tried to create something beautiful from it. It became a passion. So pursuing a way to write and be creative has always been important to me.

As far as pursuing music, I’ve just never felt like I was good at anything else. Nothing feels more natural to me than writing a song, and I feel really called to help kids who were broken like me. To me, that’s worth fighting for.

Kaylene Widdoes: I think I would say I can’t imagine doing anything else. Sitting in an office for the next 30 years doesn’t sound nearly as fun as touring the country and playing shows every night. We love what we do and there’s passion in every note we play. To be able to do what I love and play music that we’ve written is amazing.

Interview: Chris James of Threatpoint

Threatpoint are a metal band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Focusing on hooks and a fluid sound to draw listeners in, the band are one of the fastest growing heavy acts in the scene, and Legendary Kids Press was recently able to chat with vocalist Chris James about their music, touring plans and much more.

Describe your music for those who have never listened to Threatpoint before.

Threatpoint has a unique blend of many styles of rock and metal: thrash, a splash of death metal, old-school power metal and just plain old grinding hard rock. Bottom line is we always focus on a groove for the listener, something that is catchy and head bang-worthy. If you don’t know a band and you hear them for the first time, it’s important to grab the listener with hooks and something quickly memorable.

How did the band come together?

We are basically the result of the demise of three older bands. We all knew each other from playing around the area. We started back in 2012 and are really just getting rolling.
