Review: Drug Church - Swell EP

What happens when you take aggressive punk and mix it with hard-hitting rock? You get Swell, the new EP from No Sleep Records’ Drug Church. The five-song release is a modern punk lover’s dream, filled to the brim with 90s-esque rawness and a sound that’s like no other.

Each track brings something new to the table while coming together with the rest in a way that’s cohesive and strong. Musically, the album is raw, without any polished bells or whistles. Drug Church are bringing 90s-style punk back into the forefront and are doing so in a way that’s unique. The band are able to take influences like Pixies and Fucked Up and take the best aspects of both without leaving their own music sounding like the other. There’s even a few instances of solid rock and shoegaze, leaving the listener exposed to a sound that defies boundaries. Lyrically, the album will leave listeners feeling vulnerable. The band have aimed to alienate their fans and have achieved just that with Swell.

Review: Rathborne - Soft

Been searching for an album that blends the nostalgia that is classic rock with the punk you grew up loving? Well, look no further than Luke Rathborne’s new album, Soft, a record encapsulating the young rocker’s potential. An eleven-song release, Soft is a hat-tip to the past and one that does so in good fashion.

Soft is an album that leaves behind the polished glamour seen in today’s music industry and opts to showcase a rawness that reminds one of DIY garage rock. Songs like “Low!” and “Last Forgiven” are the best examples of this, while hinting at some of Rathborne’s classic rock influences. Speaking of influences, Soft is a release that’ll have listeners reminiscing of such acts like The Black Keys, Elvis Costello, The Ramones and even Pixies with its unique blend of ambient and classic rock.

INTERVIEW: Aaron Barry of Gracie Mae

Gracie Mae are an ambient rock band from London, Ontario. The three-piece, who are currently looking to release their third EP later this year, have experienced a pretty steady rise since their formation last year and are looking to further that growth in 2015. Recently, I was able to speak with frontman Aaron Barry about the band’s music, his hopes for the new year and where he sees the band going down the road.

How would you describe Gracie Mae’s sound to those who have never listened to the band before?

This is always such a tough question to answer. What I perceive the band to sound like is obviously totally different than the next person would describe it. The best way I could describe it is just by what people have told me: old Alexisonfire, Coheed and Cambria or Circa Survive-esque. I would just say indie rock with post-hardcore roots.

The band formed in 2014 and has had a pretty quick rise. What do you attribute to this?

I don’t know if I’d say [we’ve] “risen” yet, but I can say we’ve just worked hard. I came out of a band before Gracie Mae that worked hard. We played 50+ shows a year and worked really hard. It was kind of a different era, where shows happened more, but that’s where I learned to work hard.

Social media has been a really great tool in spreading our band. We’ve been pretty selective about playing shows, so we aren’t on everyone’s radar as far as being able to see us, so we use social media to extend or reach past Southern Ontario. Applications like Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook are a modern band’s best friend.

I would attest the gains we’ve made to working hard and understanding how important it is to be active in the online world.

Review: Histories - Fri(ends) EP

Fri(ends) is the second EP from Springfield, Missouri pop-punk four-piece Histories. The follow up to 2013’s I’m Still Doing Well, Fri(ends) might be short - it’s only three tracks long - but it features a maturity many bands spend years trying to find, and is a release every pop-punk fan needs on their iPod.

Fri(ends) begins with the catchy and personal “Not Really, But Okay”. With its melodic guitars, screaming vocals and incredibly personal lyrical content, the track is essentially an overview of what the rest of the EP has to offer. It’s quickly followed by “Think Of My When You Shave Your Legs”, a title that is reminiscent of Fall Out Boy circa Infinity On High. The song is arguably the release’s best showing, leaning toward the poppier side of the spectrum. “Turtle Dove” closes out the EP with your typical pop-punk sentiments, showcasing screaming vocals, hard-hitting drums and lyrics that’ll leave you hitting repeat over and over again.
